Oct. 19 Benefit Concert for PACEM

Fire will perform on Sunday, Oct. 19th, at 3:00pm at Holy Comforter Catholic Church, 208 East Jefferson Street, Charlottesville. Fire, an a cappella women’s choir, will be joined by Terra Voce, a flute and cello duo. The concert will benefit PACEM, a program that provides support to the area’s homeless. The public is cordially invited to attend. Ample parking is available at the parking garage on East Market Street.

PACEM Now Hiring for 2008-09 Winter Shelter Season

Jobs with PACEM — Winter 2008-09

PACEM is once again looking to hire seasonal staff for our low-barrier
wintertime shelter program for the homeless. The following positions will be available from November 2008-March 2009:

* Intake Specialists, PACEM Men’s Shelter and PACEM Women’s Shelter – Responsible for leading new guests through the intake/assessment process, welcoming returning guests, screening all comers for eligibility, providing hotel vouchers for eligible families, helping guests get settled in for the evening at the host site, and generally troubleshooting whatever problems arise during the hours of 4:30pm to 8:30pm. Pay is $12/hour. Hiring for 1-5 shifts/week (4 hours per shift).

* Overnight Supervisors, PACEM Men’s Shelter and PACEM Women’s Shelter – Responsible for overseeing shelter operations during the overnight hours, ensuring the safety/security of host sites and guests during that time, performing intake/assessments on late arrivals, getting guests up and out the door in the morning, and generally troubleshooting whatever problems arise between the hours of 8:00pm and 7:00am.  Pay is $12/hour. Hiring for 1-3 shifts/week (11 hours per shift).

No prior experience with the homeless is necessary to work for PACEM, but it is preferred. Excellent people skills, patience and compassion will go a long way in these positions!

“A Pillow for Every Head”

Eat Chocolate for Charity!

Come to the 2008 Chocolate Festival on Saturday, October 18 and help out some very good causes (including PACEM)!  Here’s the details:

 ”Join us for a day of pure chocolate indulgence that includes a multitude of homemade, scrumptious confections and fondue.  Proceeds from the Chocolate Festival will benefit First United Methodist, Hinton Avenue, Ivy Creek and Wesley Memorial United Methodist Churches, plus a weekday soup kitchen, Jackson Via Elementary School, two food pantries, CASA, AIM, Habitat Store, IMPACT, PACEM, Good News Jail Ministry, Literacy Volunteers and regional and international mission projects.”

BBQ Fundraiser for PACEM

Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church is planning a fund raising event with all proceeds going to PACEM.  The date is Saturday, September 27 at the Church, which is located at the corner of Emmet and Thomson, across from Memorial Gym. 

STARTING AT 4 PM WE WILL BE HAVING A BBQ–COMPLETE WITH BEANS, COLESLAW, DESSERT, ETC.  THE EVENT WILL BE HELD OUTSIDE ON THE CHURCH LAWN (WE’LL MOVE INSIDE IF IT IS RAINING).  TICKETS ARE $10……..$5 FOR UVA STUDENTS.  JOIN US FOR LIVE MUSIC, FUN & FOOD.
 
SECONDLY, WE WILL BE HOLDING A RAFFLE FOR A HANDMADE QUILT. EACH RAFFLE TICKET IS $2 AND ONE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE PRESENT TO WIN.  A PHOTO OF THE QUILT IS ATTACHED. 
 
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND COME OUT TO SUPPORT PACEM.  TICKETS FOR THE BBQ AND/OR THE QUILT CAN BE PURCHASED AT THE EVENT OR AT THE CHURCH OFFICE.
